Community Nursery School: Our Program
Founded in 1955 by a group of dedicated parents seeking an active role in the preschool education of their children, Community Nursery School continues to nurture and develop the uniqueness of every child that passes through its doors.
CNS offers classes for Toddlers with Parent, 3-year-olds, 4-year-olds, and Pre-K. Extended hours, “lunch bunches,” and a summer camp are also available.
The Toddler program at CNS introduces the concept of a school setting to two-year olds. This parent-child class allows the child and care-giver time together to develop and nurture emerging interests and to explore curiosities. With both teacher-led activities and unstructured play-time, children create, design, explore and learn while building their levels of independence. Our Toddler program is a great introduction to school life here at CNS, showing our youngest students the joy of meeting friends while learning new skills in a fun and safe environment.
Our Toddler Program is offered on Wednesdays from 12:30-2:30pm.

Community Nursery School has two well-equipped, light-filled classrooms where our three-year olds will learn, create and play guided by one of our experienced teachers. Children are encouraged to explore an ever-changing assortment of activity centers that may include art, science, puzzles, water and sand play. “Red rug” time follows with books or music and movement activities. CNS is uniquely located on a wooded lot with private nature trails and two exceptional playgrounds, allowing our students to venture (adventure!) outside nearly every day for active and imaginative play.
Our three-year old class will develop the self-help and social skills that will lead to independent success down the road. Progress is made in fine-tuning small and large motor skills, following directions, and moving from independent play toward cooperative play, all the while gaining friendships and self-confidence. Our teachers will assist your child through important milestones in their early school life, and by the end of the year children feel secure and confident in their classroom environment. Our three-year olds meet twice a week on Tuesday and Thursday mornings from 9-12.

Our four-year olds program continues to promote our learning through play philosophy, exploring with art, music and the wonderful world of books at “red rug” time. Small motor skills, including letter formation, are developing and are practiced through painting, three-dimensional art forms, clay, and complex puzzles. Literacy and language are emphasized as these concepts will be built upon in following years, either in our Pre-K class or as your child transitions to Kindergarten. Our days together are often set around a particular “theme” with songs, stories and playtime reinforcing key elements within the theme. Social and self-help skills are honed under the guidance of our experienced teachers, who work in partnership with parents to reinforce positive values and behaviors. Outside play is a vital portion of our school day and our children enjoy active, creative play on our two amazing playgrounds in nearly every kind of weather. Nature walks through wooded paths allow the children to explore and discover rock formations, vernal ponds and bird watching all right outside our back gate.
The four-year olds class meets Monday, Wednesday and Friday mornings from 9-12.

Community Nursery School has a wonderful “Pre-K” program that continues to follow our play-based model while shifting towards academic skill building under the guidance of our experienced teachers. We use creative play and guided lessons to introduce your child to science, music, art, language and early reading and early math. The Pre-K class will focus on “pre-reading” skills, emphasizing letter sounds and sight words. Number recognition, early math skills and scientific exploration are also encouraged through hands-on learning experiences that appeal to the imagination of a child (like following the life-cycle of butterflies). Most importantly, the social skills necessary to become lifelong learners continue to be developed with our oldest set of children at CNS. Friendships that may have begun as two-year olds continue to grow, creating nursery school memories that will last a lifetime!
Our Pre-K class is offered 4 or 5 afternoons per week from 12:45-3:15.

Pre-school age children from the area are invited to join Community Nursery School's summer camp. Two teachers from our staff and several high school or college students staff the summer program. The program consists of outside play, art activities related to a weekly theme, music, and stories.
A child must be 3 by the first day of summer camp and not older than going into kindergarten this coming Fall, in order to enroll in summer camp.
